One in four people experience mental health problems at some point in their lifetime. 1.6 million people in Britain are affected by eating disorders and 14-25-year-olds are most at risk. Up to a third of the population will suffer from an anxiety disorder at some time. Two in 100 adults are affected by obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), and one in every 100 children and teenagers. There are serious concerns over plans to subject church youth work in England to ‘British Values’ inspections. Under the proposals, Ofsted will be given the power to carry out extremism checks on out-of-school settings. Concerns are heightened because of Ofsted’s apparent dislike of schools with Christian ethos. The Government’s consultation on the plans stated that any “extremist” or “undesirable” teaching which is incompatible with ‘British Values’ will be prohibited. Any place which provides instruction to under 19-year-olds for more than 6 hours in any week would be covered.

A new study suggests that gene editing technology may not be as safe as scientists have claimed, and could lead to introducing hundreds of unintended mutations into the human genome. Researchers, led by investigators at Columbia University Medical Center, found a number of mutations after sequencing the entire genome of mice that had undergone CRISPR gene editing. The technique was approved for use in the UK last year despite international criticism.

The United Nations has criticised the Government's counter-terrorism strategy, Prevent, as "inherently flawed". The criticism came in a UN Human Rights Council report, which said the policy is "inconsistent with the principle of the rule of law". The scheme has previously been criticised for targeting the wrong groups. Last year, it was used to ban a Christian Union from holding meetings on college premises.

An Orthodox Jewish school has remained under scrutiny from Ofsted because it does not teach students about 'gender reassignment' or 'sexual orientation', even though it meets the required school standards in every other category. Ofsted said that the school's schemes "do not pay enough regard to developing respect and tolerance" as per the Equality Act 2010. Vishnitz Girls' School has pupils aged 3 to 8.

The world famous site has always had speakers standing on ladders so that they can be seen and heard by the large crowds that gather. It’s not just parents though, in the Young Minds’ survey of teachers over 80% agree that the pressure of examinations has taken the focus away from what should be the priority – pupil wellbeing.
