Deaths from drug overdoses continue to rise, with the UK recording the highest numbers in Europe, according to a new report from the EU drugs agency. The European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction (EMCDDA) identified a total of 8,441 overdose deaths in 2015, of which the UK accounted for 31 per cent. | |

A doctor has spoken out after two separate insurance companies refused to pay for life-saving treatments for his patients but did offer to pay to end their lives. Dr Brian Callister, associate professor of internal medicine at the University of Nevada, shared how companies in neighbouring California and Oregon refused to help transfer and treat two of his patients who could not receive the necessary care in his hospital. | |

The biblical definition of marriage was dropped by the Scottish Episcopal Church at its General Synod meeting in Edinburgh yesterday. The denomination now states that marriages will take place in its churches merely “in accordance with the civil law of Scotland”. | |

The Northern Ireland Gambling Prevalence Survey 2016, published on Thursday, identified concerning high rates of problem gambling in Northern Ireland compared to the rest of the UK. It revealed that 2.3% of those surveyed were problem gamblers, four times as high as in England (0.5%) and significantly greater than both Scotland (0.7%) and Wales (1.1%). | |

A new ComRes poll commissioned by Where Do They Stand, clearly shows that two thirds of Britons want the abortion time limit reduced from 24 weeks. The majority of the public (82%) would back change to the abortion legislation and require a waiting period of five days between a consultation with a doctor and an abortion taking place, so that a woman can carefully consider all options available to her and not feel pressured into an abortion. | |

More sex education is linked to higher rates of teenage pregnancy, a new study has shown. It found that teenage pregnancy rates have declined in areas where the government has cut spending on sex education and birth control. The decline was steepest in areas where councils slashed their teenage pregnancy budgets most aggressively. The results follow calls for relationships and sex education to be made compulsory in schools. | |

An overwhelming majority of women want the abortion limit lowered, and 65 per cent of Britons say using taxpayer money on abortions abroad is wrong, according to a new poll. The findings also revealed that almost 80 per cent of people support a five day ‘consideration period’ before an abortion, as is the case in the Netherlands. The Eliminate Hate Campaign (EHC) aims to pressure the media to refer to US organisations which back traditional family values as ‘hate groups’, and has compiled a list of 52 it wishes to target and undermine. | |

Four out of five children want Facebook and other social media sites to protect them from pornography and bullying, an NSPCC report has warned. The charity said that from the 1,696 children and young people surveyed, the majority - 1,380 - felt that companies are currently not doing enough to protect them from pornography, self-harm, bullying, and hatred on their sites. | |

Scientists have been able to keep premature lambs alive for weeks using an artificial womb that looks like a plastic bag, according to a study published today. The authors of the study, published in Nature Communications, hope that the new approach will lead to better survival chances for babies born prematurely. | |
