A recent study of the most premature babies showed that most went on to suffer disabilities. For babies born at twenty five weeks or less, researchers found that by the age of six only 20% of surviving children had no disabilities; 22% had severe disabilities, including cerebral palsy; while 34% had milder problems such as a squint. The study also found that only 11% of all babies born at twenty three weeks survived. The figure may now be closer to 20% due to improvements of care. However, Bliss, the premature baby charity, says about fifty babies born at twenty three weeks survive every year and it would be wrong to deny them the chance to live.

A new study has found that boys who attend independent Christian schools display higher levels of citizenship than those who attend state maintained schools. The study also indicated that those in Christian schools have higher levels of social concern, personal well being and sexual morality. It is based on findings from nearly 13,000 boys in years nine and ten. 73% were concerned about poverty in the Third World, compared with 64% of other pupils. 62% believed that pornography was too readily available, compared with 40% of other pupils and only 1 in 10 believed they could do nothing to help solve the world’s problems, compared with 1 in 5 of other pupils.

Teenagers who use cannabis are up to ten times as likely to develop serious mental illness as those who do not, research shows. Scientists have found that the drug can cause permanent physical changes to the still growing brain, which can lead to psychosis and schizophrenia in those worst affected. They also believe that early exposure to cannabis – downgraded from a class B to a class C drug last year increased the risk of users moving on to harder drugs such as heroin. The research will add to fears that Britain, which has the highest level of cannabis use in the western world, is sitting on a mental health time bomb, fuelled by the belief the drug is safe.
