In 2002-2004 asylum seekers came mainly from Iraq, Afghanistan, Somalia and Zimbabwe. In the 1990s they were from the Balkans. In the 1970s they were from South East Asia. In the 1940s they were from Poland. The only things these states have in common are war and repression. There is no other common cause of mass movements of people seeking asylum.

An international study of 100,000 teens across 35 countries has found that the UK has the third highest proportion of binge drinking teens in Europe. Binge drinking was defined as five units of alcohol in a session, three times a month. 26% of boys owned up to this (an increase of 2% since 1999) but girls are at 29% (an increase of 9%). Experts blame the findings, from the European School Survey Project on Alcohol and Other Drugs published in December, on a variety of factors including: women's freedom, less disapproval of drunkenness, the ladette culture, and Alcopops.

A government survey of 10,000 British children aged 11 to 15 reveals that 23% had drunk alcohol in the previous week compared to 25% in 2003. For the first time since the biannual survey began in 1982 girls are drinking the same amount as boys. Boy's drinking has fallen since 2003 while girls have stayed the same. The average weekly consumption among girls is 10.2 units, while for boys it is 11.3 units.

The majority of young people are interested in political issues, a recent survey has found. The research carried out by the Electoral Commission (EC), to coincide with the Y Vote Mock Elections for youth, found that 81% of 16 to 20-year-olds interviewed felt strongly about political issues such as crime and education.

Almost one in five teenage girls have been hit by their boyfriend and 43% believe that violence of this kind is okay, according to a recent survey carried out by the NSPCC and Sugar magazine. Over 2,000 girls were questioned, 16% of whom had been struck by their partner. 15% had been pushed and 4% had been regularly attacked. One of the most revealing statistics showed that 32% of girls who had violent boyfriends also had violent parents. The NSPCC believes this shows a clear link between those who are attacked at home then go on to be attacked by partners. 6% of the 13-19 year olds questioned had been forced to have sex with their boyfriends. Although a percentage of those questioned had been hit by their parents (20%), seen their parents hit each other (11%), and witnessed them screaming and shouting at each other (25%), more than half did not view those incidents as domestic violence.
