Almost half of the UK’s National Cycle Network is in a poor or very poor condition, according to new research. High-speed vehicles, too many barriers and unstable surfaces were among the faults found on the 16,500-mile network of paths and on-road cycling and walking routes. Independent analysis commissioned by transport charity Sustrans classified the condition of 42% of it as “very poor” and 4% as “poor”. | |

The jobless total rose to 1.38 million in the three months to September after a big increase in the number of men out of work. One in seven people are not getting the most out of apps due to lack of confidence and knowledge about how they work, a survey suggests. Some 13% of people feel they are missing out on the full benefits of apps for these reasons – including 12% of those aged 25 to 34 who said this – NatWest found. One in six (16%) over 55s also said they did not feel they were getting the full benefits of using apps. | |

The average property now takes nearly a week longer to sell than it did a year ago, according to an analysis of cities and major towns. Sellers typically face a 102-day wait to see their property snapped up, the report from Post Office Money found. Public transport campaigners have warned that “buses are in crisis” after new analysis showed journeys are at their lowest point since 2006. The average lifespan in the UK is expected to rise slightly from 80.8 years to 83.3 by 2040, research shows. In the world league table of longevity, Britons are expected to move up from 26th to 23rd place. But they are easily outranked by the Spanish, whose predicted average lifespan of 85.8 years puts them first in the list, compiled by the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation. | |

A majority of people oppose children being allowed to ‘self-define’ their gender, a poll in October found, but some respondents say they back choosing your own species. Among the 2,000 people asked, 19% backed people choosing their own age and 10% said self-declaration of species was acceptable. For people aged between 18 and 24, the figures were even more marked with nearly one in five backing self-definition of species. | |
