The number of people in work has continued to rise while average earnings have grown slightly faster than inflation, official figures show. Employment increases by 3,000 in the three months to July to 32.4 million, giving a rate of 75.5%, according to the Office for National Statistics. Workers also benefited as average earnings increased by 2.6% in the year to July, up from 2.4% the previous month.

British Workers missed an average of 4.1 days through sickness last year, the lowest figure ever recorded, says The Times. The Office for National Statistics (ONS) began collecting data on sick days in 1993, when the average was 7.2 days. Since 1999, the figure has declined steadily, for which reasons that are unclear.

Almost a third (30 per cent) of professional parents said they know someone who has used ethically dubious means to get their children into a good school. It’s quite clear that alcohol can damage the brain – but could it, in moderation, have a protective effect? That is the possibility raised by a new study of 9,000 civil servants in London, which found that those who had consumed alcohol within recommended limits in middle age were significantly less likely to develop dementia in later life than those who abstained (but heavy drinkers were at even greater risk).

Many popular family cars are unable to use a fuel which could be introduced to forecourts to cut carbon emissions, according to research. Some Volkswagen, Ford and Nissan vehicles are among those which are not compatible with E10 petrol, designed to be less harmful to the environment. The majority of vehicles in use today are approved to be fuelled with the petrol, but some older vehicles are not.

55 per cent of victims of crime in England and Wales say the justice system failed to meet their needs, and only 25 per cent felt they were properly supported after reporting incidents to the police. Two-thirds of victims were left unaware of their rights. 20 per cent said they were not referred to support services and 43 per cent were not notified of developments like a perpetrator being arrested. British Consumers are facing a hike in food prices of at least 5 per cent as a result of extreme weather this year, economics warn. Extended ‘frigid and baking weather’ seen in the winter and summer will likely increase household food bills by an estimated £7.15 a month, the Centre for Economics and Business Research says. Between March and July, the wholesale “farm gate” prices of some staples rocketed. The price of wheat for bread rose by a fifth and carrots by 80 per cent.

Going teetotal is the only way to avoid risking health with alcohol, scientists have claimed. A major global study has concluded there is no safe limit to alcohol consumption. Previous research suggests moderate levels of alcohol – around one drink a day for women and two for men – may protect against heart disease. But the American authors of the new study insist that any benefits from drinking alcohol are outweighed by the harms.

More than 14 million people, including 4.5 million children, live in poverty in the UK, according to a new measure designed to track its rate. More than half of that number – 58.2 per cent – live in what the analysis calls “persistent poverty”, where people are in poverty now, and have been for at least two out of the past three years.

In May 2012 the UK Christian Institute reported that children as young as four were being removed from school for sexual misconduct. They were among almost 15,000 youngsters who had been expelled or suspended for sexual offenses – including assaults on teachers – in the previous five years. More Migrants from eight eastern European countries are now leaving the UK than coming for the first time since the nations joined the EU in 2004, official figures show. Estimated net long-term migration from the so-called EU8 states including Poland and Czech Republic has dropped sharply since the Brexit vote. A similar downward trend has occurred for other groups of EU states, bringing overall EU net migration down to around 87,000.

Just over two million more people have found work since the financial crash of 2008, with more than a million of those in the poorest third of households, the research by the Resolution Foundation showed.
