In the UK the Islamic population increased from 1.5 million in 2001 to 2,7 million in 2011 (4.8% of UK population). The Christian population fell from 17.3 million in 2001 to 33.2 million in 2011 (59% of population).

Britain's largest teaching union has said that schools should be required to portray same-sex relationships positively. A motion passed at the National Union of Teachers' conference also called for schools to promote 'LGBT History Month' and to develop a curriculum that is "inclusive of LGBT issues." General Secretary Christine Blower urged all political parties to back the plan.

The Society for the Protection of Unborn Children (SPUC) has spoken out against a recent Court of Appeal judgement in a foetal alcohol syndrome case. Judges ruled that a child born with foetal alcohol syndrome is not legally entitled to compensation after her mother drank excessively while pregnant. The seven-year-old was born with severe brain damage and is now in care.

8,318 tons of food were donated to UK Food Banks in 2013-14. Approximately 30,000 people volunteered. 913,138 people were given three days worth of emergency food and support. (330,225 of whom were children). Primary causes of food bank use include benefit delays , low income and benefit changes. Regionally the highest number of food bank users were in Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, the Northeast and the Northwest.

A study of 583 religious societies around the world has concluded that humans are more likely to believe in powerful and judgmental gods during times of hardship and extremes of weather. The study, published in Proceeding of the National Academy of Science, used historical social and ecological data from between 1900 and 1960 for 583 traditional societies with religious beliefs. These included common religious believes. These included common religions like Christianity and Islam along with rarer religions such as Zahv, the belief system of the Akha people in Southeast Asia.

Research from the Institute for Fiscal Studies (IPS) has shown that young people have suffered most during the economic recession. In the five years following the economic crisis, those under 30 saw their incomes reduce (twice as much as older people). The research also showed that employment among the under 30’s fell by 4 percentage points, but was unchanged among the over 30’s and that one in four 22-30 year olds depends on their parents for somewhere to live.

A poll for the National Children’s Bureau has suggested that young people’s attitude towards traditional teenage vices are more restrained than previous generations. More people (42%) thought that the legal age for buying cigarettes should be raised (it is currently 18) than thought it should be lowered (10%) Similarly, 37% would raise the age for gambling (only 9% would lower it) and 21% would raise the age for gambling (only 9% would lower it) and 21% would raise the age at which you can buy alcohol (7% would reduce it). Young people also believed that 16 was too young to join the army and would raise the minimum age to get married. Yet while 39% agreed with Ed Milliband that the voting age should be lowered to 16, only 13% said they would be certain to vote in a general election when given the chance.

A poll for the National Children’s Bureau has revealed that more young people would raise the age of consent than lower it. The research, consisting of over 2,700 interviews with school children aged 11-16, showed that 22% believed the age of consent should be higher, with only 16% saying it should be lowered.

A study by Soul Survivor Church in Watford has found that 41% of young people would go to church if invited. The research, by those on Soul Survivor’s Soul 61 gap year also found that 31% of young people would describe themselves as Christian. The research was carried out among 1,000 young people in Watford earlier this year.
