Eritrean Christian refugees are forgotten by the world, it was reported in April. Often eclipsed by the crisis in the Middle East, one in 12 Eritreans has fled their country, many of those leaving being Christians. Eritrea has been branded “one of the world’s fastest emptying nations” and “the North Korea of Africa”. In 2015, 40,000 risked death from drowning to escape to Italy. Others fled to Sudan or Ethiopia. Eritrea has jailed hundreds of Christians simply because of their faith. Many are now living in makeshift refugee camps in neighbouring Ethiopia.

War and persecution has led to a haemorrhaging of Christians from the Middle East, particularly from Syria and Iraq, it was reported in April. Before 2011, Syrian Christians comprised around 8-10% of a 22 million population. 40-50% of those Christians have since left. Before 2003, there were approximately 1.5 million Christians in Iraq, but estimates now range from 200-500,000. In May the Daily Telegraph reported a spokesman saying: “Christians will all have left Iraq in five years”.

Children in young as three are being referred to a clinic for transsexual treatment the BBC revealed in early May. The Victoria Derbyshire programme highlighted that in the past year, three pre-school children have been referred to the Gender Identity Development Service at the Tavistock and Portman NHS foundation Trust. They were among 167 kids under the age of ten to have been referred over the last 12 months.

Executions in Iran surged to nearly 1,000 in 2015, the highest level in more than a quarter of a century, the UN’s special rapporteur on human rights in Iran reported in March. Dr Ahmed Shaheed reported to the UN human rights council that at least 966 people were put to death in Iran last year, roughly double the number executed in 2010 and ten times as many as in 2005.

A University of Cambridge study released in late March found that unborn children who have abnormalities in the early weeks of pregnancy may go on to develop into healthy babies. A professor from the university began the research after a medical test on her own baby showed that a quarter of the cells in the placenta were abnormal – however, the child was born healthy.

Released this week, the report by think thank New Philanthropy Capital showed that almost half of all overseas aid and human rights charities are religiously based. Of this number 60% of faith-based overseas aid groups are Christian, along with 43% of human rights charities.
