Reviewed by Tony Cummings Much, much better than the early albums in The Series, this set features lots of guest lead vocalists (including country music's Buddy Greene) and a concept that supposedly is a showcase for numerous styles (from blues, to jazz to doowop to rap - as well as some more contrived ones like 'ballad1 and 'contemporary'). There are some fine lead vocals, some nimble harmonies and two or three of the songs, thankfully extending beyond Keith Lancaster songbook are above average. Well worth checking but beware of some of the other The Series albums.
Also reviewed in CR60:
This recording, originally from 1994, is part of a series, which includes 'Acappella Christmas', 'Country' and 'Spirituals' with the aim of broadening this type of vocal style into less explored musical styles and indeed this CD achieves this. Here you will find traditional gospel along with rap, doo-wop, R&B and jazz. In addition, there are excellent Take 6 type vocals displayed here including those of Jeff Murrah and Jim Cole delivering encouraging messages. Some of the tracks are somewhat short and due to the contrasting styles on the album, unsettling; making the album a little disjointed. However, I found the album very enjoyable and encouraging. Recommended especially as an introduction to fine Acappella vocals.
